About Coe Dolven

For more than 25 years I’ve practiced as a licensed clinical professional counselor (LCPC) and more than 10 years as an equine-assisted psychotherapist (EAP). I was raised and educated in Montana and have lived all over the state. My passions for teaching, healing from trauma, and animals combined to shape my counseling practice. After teaching high school I became a 9-1-1 operator. That profoundly affected my career aspirations. I interacted with folks in the midst of traumatic events and felt I wanted to be involved with their healing process.

My counseling career started at St. Patrick Hospital’s Employee Assistance Program providing short-term counseling and referrals. But I was drawn to a longer term healing relationship with my clients. My focus on trauma led me to explore progressive treatment modalities, such as Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) and Psychoanalytic Psychodynamic Psychotherapy. EMDR is a particularly effective method for uncovering, discovering, and reprocessing past trauma.

I spent 10 years practicing at Red Willow Center for Health and Healing, collaborating with a variety of integrative and holistic health practitioners. Part of the reason I was a good fit with the intentional group at Red Willow is because of my experience with animals. I adopted a rescue horse and she taught me much about how horses can be useful for healing. Combining my passion for counseling and horses, I became an Equine-Assisted Psychotherapist.
